The venue is the biggest line in most budgets and the one with the most fees hidden behind the headline number. It is also the only vendor whose sales team is trained, which means you are the least experienced person in the conversation.

Can I have a sample invoice for a wedding my size, on my date?
What to listen forThis single request reveals more than any tour. A real invoice shows minimum spend, service charge, tax, rental, ceremony fee, cake cutting, corkage and overtime. Reluctance to produce one is itself the answer.
Is the service charge gratuity, and do I tip on top?

What has gone up in price in the last two years?
What to listen forAn honest venue tells you. This matters if you are booking eighteen months out with a contract that permits price adjustment - ask whether your quoted rates are locked.

Can I see the space set up for a wedding, not empty?

Is a venue service charge the same as a tip?
Often not. Many venues charge 18-24% as an operating charge rather than gratuity, with staff tipped separately. Ask directly, because on a large food and beverage spend the difference is thousands of dollars.
