How does mariachi work at a wedding?

A mariachi ensemble at a Mexican wedding is not background music. It is a set - violins, trumpets, guitarrón and vihuela, in full traje - performing for a defined stretch of the day, most often the ceremony, the cocktail hour, or the arrival of the couple at the reception. Most couples book mariachi for one or two hours and run a DJ or band for the rest of the night.
Where in the day it fits
The three common placements are the ceremony itself, the hour immediately after it while guests move and mingle, and the couple's entrance at the reception. Some families also book a serenata the night before or the morning of - a smaller set performed for the bride at home, which is its own tradition and is often the more emotional of the two.
Mariachi rarely plays the whole reception, partly because the repertoire is not built for four hours of dancing and partly because the cost of a full ensemble for that long is substantial. The standard arrangement is mariachi early, DJ or band later.
What it costs and what you are booking
Ensembles are priced by size and by hour. A smaller group of five or six players for an hour is commonly $400 to $800; a full ten to twelve-piece ensemble for two hours often runs $1,200 to $2,500, more in markets with few groups and in peak season.
You are booking a specific ensemble, not a style. Ask who is actually playing, hear recent live audio rather than a produced track, and confirm whether the trumpets are included - a mariachi without them is a different sound.
Planning it properly
A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.
- Give them the song list early
- Mariachi repertoire is deep but not infinite, and family songs matter here. Send your must-plays weeks ahead so they can prepare anything unfamiliar.
- Sort out sound with your venue and DJ
- Mariachi is largely acoustic and often needs no PA outdoors, but indoors or in a large room it does. Your DJ and the ensemble need to have agreed who provides what.
- Tell them where to stand
- Twelve musicians in full traje need floor space and an entrance. Walk it with your coordinator.
- Plan the handover
- The moment mariachi finishes and the DJ takes over is a real transition. Scheduled properly it is seamless; unscheduled it is ten minutes of silence.
