What happens at a Nigerian traditional wedding?

Nigerian · also called introduction ceremony, igba nkwu, Yoruba engagement

All wedding traditions

A Nigerian traditional wedding is a separate, full-scale event from the white wedding, usually held days or weeks before it — and for many families it is the one that counts. The specifics differ sharply between Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and other groups, but all of them are family-to-family, colour-coordinated and very large.

Yoruba and Igbo, briefly

At a Yoruba engagement, the groom's family formally asks for the bride through an alaga - a hired MC who runs the proceedings with humour and holds both families to protocol. The groom prostrates before her parents, gifts are presented and a letter of proposal is read aloud and answered.

At an Igbo igba nkwu, the wine-carrying ceremony, the bride is given a cup of palm wine and must find her groom in the crowd - who is often deliberately hidden - and offer it to him. Drinking it in front of everyone is the moment the marriage is recognised.

Aso ebi, and the scale

Guests wear aso ebi, a chosen fabric that the family selects and sells to attendees, so the room reads as colour-coordinated groups. Choosing the fabric and distributing it is a real planning task that starts months out.

Guest counts run large - several hundred is ordinary - and spraying money over the dancing couple is standard. Both facts should shape your venue and catering decisions from the beginning rather than being discovered late.

Planning it properly

A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.

Book a caterer who has cooked at this scale
Several hundred guests, specific dishes, and often service across a long day. This is not a standard wedding catering brief.
Start aso ebi fabric months ahead
Selecting, ordering and distributing fabric to hundreds of guests takes time and coordination, and guests need it before they can have outfits made.
Hire an alaga or MC who knows the protocols
For a Yoruba ceremony especially, the alaga runs the event. This is a specialist role, not a generic MC booking.
Tell your venue about money spraying
Some venues object to cash on the floor, and somebody has to collect it. Agree the arrangement in advance.

Common questions

What is the difference between a Nigerian traditional wedding and a white wedding?

They are two separate events. The traditional wedding is the family-to-family ceremony - Yoruba engagement, Igbo igba nkwu and so on - usually held days or weeks before the church or civil white wedding. For many families the traditional one is the one that counts.

What is aso ebi?

A fabric chosen by the family and bought by guests so that groups at the wedding are colour-coordinated. Selecting and distributing it starts months ahead, because guests need time to have outfits made.

What is igba nkwu?

The Igbo wine-carrying ceremony. The bride is given a cup of palm wine and must find her groom among the guests, who is often deliberately hidden, and offer it to him. His drinking it publicly marks the marriage.

The vendors who make this work

Nigerian traditional wedding depends on people who have done it before. Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought.
