What is the veil ceremony in a wedding?

Mexican, Spanish & Filipino · also called el velo, the veil and cord, veiling ceremony

All wedding traditions

In the veil ceremony, padrinos drape a length of white fabric over the bride's head and pin it to the groom's shoulder, covering the couple together during part of the ceremony. It is one of the three ceremonial gifts in Mexican and Filipino Catholic weddings, alongside the lazo and las arras, and it is about protection: what covers one of you now covers both.

What the veil signifies

The usual reading is shelter. Placed over the bride's head and attached to the groom, the veil makes a single covered space out of two people, and the marriage is understood as the thing that shelters them from then on. In Filipino weddings it is often explained as the couple being clothed as one.

It is frequently paired directly with the cord: veil first, then lazo over the top, so the couple is both covered and bound. Where all three gifts are used, the order is generally veil, then cord, then coins, though families vary.

How it is done

The padrinos de velo step forward after the vows. One arranges the veil over the bride's head or shoulders, the other pins the far end to the groom's shoulder or lapel. The couple stays veiled through the prayers that follow, and it is removed near the end of the ceremony.

In many Filipino weddings the bride's own long veil is used rather than a separate cloth, which means the moment is partly a matter of unpinning, arranging and re-pinning something already on her head. It takes longer than couples expect.

Planning it properly

A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.

Pin it, do not balance it
The veil has to survive kneeling, standing and prayers. Whoever pins it needs a real pin and a moment to do it properly - build that time into the order of service.
Warn your hair stylist
A veil that gets lifted, draped and removed mid-ceremony interacts with the hairstyle underneath it. Your stylist should know at the trial, not on the morning.
Tell your videographer about the audio
The couple is under fabric for several minutes of prayer. Lapel mics matter more here than at most ceremonies.

Common questions

What does the veil ceremony symbolise?

Protection and unity - the veil covers the bride and is pinned to the groom so that one covering shelters them both. In Filipino weddings it is often described as the couple being clothed as one.

Do you need the lazo and the veil, or just one?

Either. Many Mexican and Filipino ceremonies use all three gifts - veil, cord and coins - but plenty of couples choose one or two. There is no requirement to include all of them.

Who places the veil?

The padrinos de velo, a couple chosen for that role, place and pin it. It is a separate honour from the padrinos of the cord or the coins.

The vendors who make this work

The veil ceremony depends on people who have done it before. Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought.
