The maid of honour's real job is not on the list anyone hands you. It is to be the person who notices what is going wrong before the bride does, and to handle it without telling her. Everything else — the shower, the speech, the dress, the signature — is scheduling.
Before the wedding
Host or co-host the bridal shower with the bridesmaids, and organise the bachelorette — including circulating an honest all-in cost early so nobody is surprised. Coordinate the bridesmaids on dresses, fittings, hair and makeup timings, and payment.
Be the person the bride can complain to. Much of this role is absorbing stress rather than adding to it, and the most useful thing you can say in most months is 'I'll handle it.'
On the day
Get her fed and watered, hold the bouquet, fix the dress, manage the bustle after the ceremony — learn it at a fitting, because nobody can work one out in a bathroom at 9pm. Keep the phone, the lipstick and the emergency kit.
Sign the marriage licence as a witness if you have been asked. Give the speech. Then watch the room: for the relative who needs a seat, the vendor who needs an answer, the thing the bride would be dealing with if you were not.
What the role does not require
Paying for things you cannot afford. If the dress, the travel and the bachelorette exceed your budget, say so early and privately — a good friend would rather know than have you quietly absorb it.
Being a wedding planner. If the wedding needs coordination, that is a coordinator's job, and suggesting one is more useful than attempting it yourself.
What to actually do about it
- Learn the bustle at a fitting
- Genuinely the most useful five minutes of preparation in this role. Take a photograph of it.
- Get the vendor contact list from the coordinator
- So you can answer a question without waking the bride's mother.
- Circulate bachelorette costs before anyone books
- One honest number early, not instalments. It is the main reason people decline this role.
- Time your speech and cut it to five minutes
- Read it aloud twice. Nerves accelerate everyone, and eleven minutes is the default failure.
Common questions
What does the maid of honor actually do?
Hosts or co-hosts the shower, organises the bachelorette, coordinates the bridesmaids, gives a speech, signs as a witness if asked, and on the day handles the dress, the bustle and anything going wrong - ideally before the bride notices.
Does the maid of honor have to pay for the bachelorette?
No. Attendees pay their own way and the group customarily splits the bride's share. If the combined cost of dress, travel and bachelorette exceeds your budget, say so early and privately.
Does the maid of honor have to give a speech?
It is customary but not compulsory, and a good friend will not force it. If you are giving one, five minutes with a single story beats a list of memories.
The vendors this depends on
Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who proved they actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought at any price.
