What is a haldi ceremony?

South Asian · also called pithi, turmeric ceremony, gaye holud

All wedding traditions

At the haldi ceremony, family members smear a paste of turmeric, sandalwood and oil onto the bride and groom - usually at their own homes, usually the morning of or the day before the wedding. It is a blessing, a skin ritual, and in practice a licensed opportunity for relatives to cover the couple in yellow paste while everyone laughs at them.

What it is for

Turmeric is understood as purifying and auspicious, and the paste is applied to bless the couple, ward off harm and give the skin a glow before the wedding. Married women in the family usually begin, and then it escalates as everyone joins in.

The tone is important: haldi is not solemn. It is deliberately messy and funny, and it is frequently the event where the couple's families relax into each other for the first time. In Bengali tradition the equivalent is gaye holud; in Gujarati families, pithi.

The staining, which is real

Turmeric stains skin, nails, hair, fabric, tile and grout. The couple wears clothes designated to be ruined - traditionally yellow - and the ceremony is almost always held outdoors or somewhere hoseable.

It washes off skin over a day or so with scrubbing, which is why haldi is scheduled with enough margin before the wedding. Nail beds and light-coloured grout hold it longest.

Planning it properly

A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.

Hold it somewhere you do not mind staining
Outdoors, on a terrace, or on a surface that can be hosed. Not on pale carpet, ever.
Schedule enough margin before the wedding
Turmeric needs a day and some scrubbing to fade. The morning of the wedding is cutting it fine.
Warn your hair and makeup artist
They need to know what the skin has just been through, especially if there is any residual tint.
Dress everyone for destruction
Guests get covered too. Say so on the invitation so nobody arrives in something they love.

Common questions

What is the purpose of the haldi ceremony?

Turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom as a blessing - understood as purifying, auspicious and good for the skin before the wedding. In practice it is also a deliberately messy, joyful event that brings both families together.

When is the haldi ceremony held?

Usually the morning of the wedding or the day before, at the bride's and groom's homes separately. Leaving a day's margin helps, since turmeric takes time and scrubbing to fade from skin.

Does turmeric stain your skin?

Yes, and clothing, nails and surfaces too. Wear clothes you are willing to ruin - traditionally yellow - and hold the ceremony outdoors or somewhere that can be washed down.

The vendors who make this work

Haldi depends on people who have done it before. Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought.
