What is saptapadi, the seven steps?
Hindu · also called seven steps, saat phere, seven vows
Saptapadi is the heart of a Hindu wedding: the couple takes seven steps together around a sacred fire, and with each step makes a specific vow. In most traditions the marriage is considered complete and binding at the seventh step - not at a pronouncement, not at a signature, but at a shared walk.
The seven vows
Each step carries its own promise, and while the wording varies by region and family, the shape is consistent: to provide for and nourish each other; to grow together in strength; to prosper and hold wealth in common; to share happiness and hardship; to care for their children and family; to stay together through the seasons of life; and to remain friends, lifelong, above all else.
That last one is worth noticing. The seventh and binding vow in one of the world's oldest continuous marriage rites is a promise of friendship.
Around the fire
The steps are taken around Agni, the sacred fire, which serves as the witness to the marriage - the fire is the reason the ceremony is legally and religiously complete, standing in the role a registrar or congregation plays elsewhere. The couple's garments are usually knotted together for the circuits.
A full Hindu ceremony containing saptapadi commonly runs one to three hours and includes many other rites around it. The seven steps themselves take a few minutes.
Planning it properly
A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.
- Confirm open flame with your venue months ahead
- A sacred fire indoors is a genuine fire-code question. Many venues permit it with conditions; some will not at all, and you need to know before you book.
- Ask about ventilation and smoke alarms
- A havan produces real smoke. Venues that allow it will usually have a protocol - use it.
- Tell your photographer the ceremony is long and seated
- Guests and photographers both need to know the shape of a two-hour ceremony so the key rites are not missed while someone is changing a lens.
- Ask your priest for a written running order
- So your coordinator, photographer and videographer all know what is coming and when.
