The sangeet is the music and dance night before a South Asian wedding, and at many weddings it is the event people enjoy most. Both families perform — choreographed numbers rehearsed for weeks, often competitively — and it is where two sets of relatives who have never met stop being strangers.
What actually happens
A hosted evening of performances: the bride's side and the groom's side each present dances, usually to Bollywood numbers, frequently with a friendly rivalry about who has rehearsed harder. Parents, siblings, cousins and occasionally grandparents take part. The couple often performs together.
Between performances there is dinner, a DJ, and open dancing. The evening runs long, and unlike the wedding itself it has no ritual obligations - which is precisely why it is the one everyone relaxes at.
Scale, and how it has grown
Historically an intimate evening of women singing traditional songs with a dholki drum. Today, at large weddings, it is a produced event with a stage, a sound system, lighting, a choreographer and rehearsals that start months out.
Both versions are valid, and the smaller one is having a revival among couples who want something less like a show. What matters is deciding which you are hosting before you book a venue for it.
Planning it properly
A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.
- Book a DJ who has run a sangeet
- Performance tracks, cues, mic changes and a running order of a dozen acts is a different job from a reception. Ask specifically.
- Confirm the venue has a stage and rehearsal access
- Performers need to run their piece in the space. A sangeet in a room with no stage and no soundcheck is a difficult night.
- Send the DJ every track, edited, a week out
- Choreographed numbers are cut to a specific edit. The wrong version is a ruined performance somebody rehearsed for a month.
- Allow more time than you think
- A dozen performances with introductions runs well over an hour. Build the dinner around it rather than into it.
Common questions
What happens at a sangeet?
Both families perform choreographed dances - usually to Bollywood music and often competitively - interspersed with dinner and open dancing. It is held before the wedding and is frequently the most enjoyed event of the week.
Who performs at a sangeet?
Both sides: parents, siblings, cousins, friends and often the couple themselves. Groups rehearse for weeks, and at larger weddings a choreographer is hired months in advance.
How is a sangeet different from a mehndi?
A mehndi is the henna ceremony, focused on the bride having intricate designs applied over several hours. A sangeet is a music and dance night with performances from both families. Some families combine them into one evening.
The vendors who make this work
The sangeet depends on people who have done it before. Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought.
