The unveiling
Traditionally the married women of the family gathered around the bride, removed her veil and placed a cap on her head while singing. It marked a change of status in a community where that status was publicly legible.
Today most couples keep the gesture and lighten the meaning: the veil comes off at midnight, often with the bride's mother or grandmother doing it, and the room applauds a moment that used to be solemn.
Midnight games, and what they are for
The veil is thrown to the unmarried women and the groom's tie to the unmarried men, and the two who catch them dance together. Then come the games - relay races, blindfolded tasks, contests between the couple - run by the band or an MC.
