What is the bread and salt wedding tradition?

Russian, Ukrainian & Slavic · also called karavai, khleb-sol, welcoming bread

All wedding traditions

The couple's parents meet them with a decorated round loaf, the karavai, and a dish of salt. Each takes a bite without using their hands, and whoever takes the bigger bite is said to be the head of the household — which is why it is usually the funniest thirty seconds of a Slavic wedding.

What it means

Bread is prosperity and salt is the hardship that comes with any life together. Offering both to a guest is the oldest gesture of hospitality in Slavic culture, and offering it to a newly married couple is the family welcoming them into their own home.

The bigger-bite game is a modern addition to a much older ritual. Some families instead have the couple salt each other's piece, which is a promise to share the difficulty as well as the plenty.

The karavai itself

The loaf is elaborately decorated with braided dough, birds, wheat and flowers, each element carrying meaning - wheat for prosperity, intertwined rings for the marriage. It is traditionally baked by a happily married woman in the family.

It is a specialist bake, not a bread order. Bakeries in Slavic communities make them; elsewhere it is worth asking your wedding cake baker well in advance, or asking a relative.

Planning it properly

A tradition only goes well if the people running your day know it is coming. These are the things to say out loud, and who to say them to.

Order the karavai months ahead
It is a decorated ceremonial loaf, not a bread order. Find a baker who has made one, or ask a family member who knows.
Tell your photographer it happens on arrival
It takes place as the couple enters the reception, often at the door - a spot photographers do not usually plan to be in.
Decide the rustnyk or tray in advance
The loaf is presented on an embroidered cloth. Families often have one, and it belongs in the same conversation.
Brief whoever is holding it
Parents present it. They need to know when, where to stand, and what they are saying.

The vendors who make this work

Bread and salt depends on people who have done it before. Every review on Lazo comes from a couple who actually got married with that vendor, and rankings can't be bought.
