The sequence
1. Certified marriage certificate. Not the decorative one from your ceremony - a certified copy from the county where it was recorded. Order two or three; nearly every subsequent step wants to see one.
2. Social Security card. Free, and everything downstream checks against this record. Allow a couple of weeks for the update to propagate before the next step.
3. Driver's licence. In person, with the certificate and your updated Social Security details.
4. Passport. Free if your passport is under a year old, otherwise a renewal fee. Do not start this if you are travelling soon - your name must match your ticket.
5. Everything else. Banks, employer and payroll, insurance, mortgage or lease, utilities, voter registration, loyalty accounts, medical records, your will.
