The mej koob and the negotiation
Each family appoints a mej koob - a skilled, respected negotiator who knows the protocols, the songs and the order of the ritual. They conduct the discussions: the terms, the bride price, the obligations each clan takes on, and the formal acceptance of the bride into the groom's clan.
This is not a formality. The mej koob are genuinely negotiating on behalf of two lineages, and a good one is sought after. The proceedings include ritual songs and a precise etiquette of who speaks, when, and over what.
Across the days
The events move between the two households over two or three days, with formal meals at each, the presentation of the bride to the groom's ancestors, and a series of ceremonial cups. Clan identity is central throughout - marriage moves a woman from her father's clan into her husband's, and much of the ritual marks that transfer.
Many Hmong American couples now hold the traditional events across a weekend and a Western-style reception separately, which is a practical adaptation rather than a dilution.
Planning it properly

- Most of the significant moments are people seated and talking, not staged ritual. A photographer expecting a ceremony will miss the day.
